Unfortunately, Roy’s first acquaintance in Florida is Dana Matherson, a well-known bully. Then again, if Dana hadn’t been sinking his thumbs into Roy’s temples and mashing his face against the school-bus window, Roy might never have spotted the running boy. And the running boy is intriguing:...

This story is about a boy who meets a boy that is desperately trying to save some owls from some pancake company. Since Roy was a kind person he knew he had to help when he found out about the poor owls losing their homes. This story is very sad because the owls have two choices; leave their burrows or protect their young. But if the bull dozzer destroys it they will have no choice. All of the owls die or just the babies. A newbarry award winner
Roy Andrew Eberhardt: Roy is a very intelligent boy. He saw Mullet Fingers on the road, and started searching for that boy and finds out that there were owls in the construction area of the new Mother Paula's pancake house.
Beatrice Leep: Roy is brave, kind, independent, and curious. Roy is brave because he doesn’t let opinions bring him down. For example, Roy is brave because he stood up to Beatrice even after everyone says she is really strong, mean, and scary. But he still does it and she is shocked because no one has ever done that before to her. Roy is also kind. He is kind because he doesn’t hurt the other kids; in fact he stands up for them by letting Dana hit him and not pick on the other kids. Another trait is independent. Roy is independent because he doesn’t really have any friends because he moves so often but he likes to do things on his own, like adventures. Lastly Roy is curious. Roy is curious because once he saw a boy his age running without any shoes and not in school. This made him so curious that he followed him and keeps coming back to see him.
Mother Paula: The trademark symbol of Mother Paula's Pancake House.
Mrs. Eberhardt: Roy's wonderful loving mom that cares a little too much.
Garrett: Garrett is a very bad kid who skips school a lot. roy met him at lunch when roy was sitting at the end of the table and garrett noticed him and they became friends . Garrett skateboards at the mall until the mall police chase off his friends. Plus Garrett skips school a lot and is known for that.
Officer David Delinko: A police-officer who dreams of becoming a detective. He is on the case of the mysterious Mother Paula's vandal.
Dana: Dana is rude, hurtful, annoying, and demanding. Dana is rude because he doesn’t care about other people’s feelings. An example is Dana calls Roy cowgirl but Roy doesn’t like to be called that, but Dana still does it anyway. Roy tells him to stop but he doesn’t listen he does it for his own pleasure. This is an example of how Dana is rude. Dana is also hurtful. An example of this is… Dana went up to Roy and started to strangle his neck with his own hands. Dana’s strong hurtful grip left finger sized bruises on Roy’s neck. This example is one of the ways that Dana is aggressive and hurtful. Dana is annoying because he bothers other kids. An example is… Dana annoys and bothers all the smaller kids on the bus, this causes everyone he teases to make them think that he is annoying. Dana’s last character trait is demanding. He isn’t demanding in the way like “Give me all your lunch money” but in a different kind of way. For example, Dana is demanding for attention. I know this because of the way he acts and is treated at home.
Mullet Fingers: Roy encountered him run at a bus stop with no shoes. Roy followed him and appeared to only have three trash bags one with trash, one with clothes, and one with cotton mouth snakes. Beatrice is the boys sister. He dropped out of military school and lives at the dump.
Curly Branitt: The construction foreman of Mother Paula All-American Pancake House site.
Mr. Eberhardt: Roy's dad, is lay back, dosen't really care about much. He works for teh government
Roy: Roy is a nice boy who moves from state to state a lot. He gets bullied by Dana and punched him in the nose. In the beginning kind of gets bullied by Beatrice. Roy is very persistent trying to figure out who the Running Boy is. He finds out he is Beatrice’s brother. He doesn’t get along well with Beatrice at first but then becomes better friends with her.
Officer Delinko: He is friendly because he helped Roy with his bike and by giving him a ride.
Roy: Roy is very curious because he is always in other people's business he is also risky because after Beatrice told her to mind his own business. He is helpful to his parents because his mom got sick and his little sister died.
Officer Delinko: He is very friendly and always is trying to do the right thing as a police officer like when he gave Roy a ride home in the rain because he had a flat tire on his bike. He is also very hopeful because he wants to be a detective just like his Brother and his Dad
Roy: Roy is the main character. Roy is a brave boy because he hit Dana in the face when he was being bullied by him. That took a lot of courage since Dana is a lot bigger than he is. Also Roy likes to be alone. I know that because on the bus instead of socializing he reads his comic books by himself. Therefore I would describe him as a bit of a loner. Roy also does not give up easily because he keeps on trying to find the running boy. He is very forthright because when he was talking to Beatrice, he spoke to her in a very strightforward manner.
David Delinko: An officer who works for the Cocnut Cove Public Safety Department.
Officer Delinko: he is friendly because he helped Roy with his bike and by giving him a ride also he’s responsible because it takes the patrol car home every day.
Dana Matherson: Dana Matherson is a bully that picks on Roy everyday on the bus. Roy punched Dana in the nose casuing Dana to have a broken nose.
Beatrice Leep: "Beatrice the Bear" is a soccer-jock with additude. But she may hide much more than she says.
Roy: Roy is very brave for pouching Danna in the nose and then sort of beating Danna up in closet. Roy caring because he helped Beatrice
Roy: Rot is mostly a nice boy and very kind with bravery because he beat up Danna the bully and also broke his nose by accident because Danna choked Roy and by self defense punched. Roy is also adventuress because he went with molet fingers to show Roy that he wants to save the owls.
Oliver Perry: Danna is very mean and a bully because he always picks on little kids. Once Danna got beat up by Roy and broke his nose too.But i think that Danna will become nice one day the end
Roy: Roy is very curious because he is in other people's business like the running boy like the day that he broke Dana’s nose he ran off the bus to chase after the running boy. He is also risky because after Beatrice told her to mind his own business. He is helpful to his parents because his mom got sick and his little sister died. He also is judgmental of other people and judges them quickly like he did with Garrett but then he got to know him and they became friends that like to skate together.
Officer Delinko: He is very friendly and always is trying to do the right thing as a police officer like when he gave Roy a ride home in the rain because he had a flat tire on his bike. He is also very hopeful because he wants to be a detective just like his Brother and his Dad. He is so hopeful that he goes out on his own time to try and solve it but that leads to bad things. Officer Delinko is also very smart because he was the one that thought of looking in the porta potties to check if anything was in them.
Beatrice or "Beatrice the Bear": Beatrice is a chracter in the book hoot and there are many things about her but some of the things i like about is. She is verry strong and i know that because when Dana and Roy where fighting in the closit and she lifted dana up to brake up the fight. also Beatrice is sporty and I know that because in the book it said that she loves soccer and plays it all the time. another thing is that she is protective, Beatrice is protective because she protected her step brother from Roy and she protected Roy from Dana. the last thing is Beatrice is not selfish and I know why its because she gave up her soccer practice to sake Roy.
Tex: The fake name Roy used so he wouldn't get caught.
Leroy Branitt: Hoot is about a boy named who just came to Florida who sees a boy running away from the school bus without books or shoes. Roy decides to see what the boy is up to, and he embarks on a journey and sees out of the ordinary things that makes Florida look better than it has looked before.
