“This is another book I have loved since I was young. It is also by the author of my favorite book, The Perilous Gard. The heroine in this story has to stay with a relative she doesn't really like in the ancestral family home. The ghosts that inhabit the house befriend her and tell her a tale of hilarious adventure during the time of the American Revolution. The story is told from several viewpoints, the heroine, the ghost Barbara, and the ghost of her nemesis, British hero Peaceable Drummond Sherwood, whom she gets the last laugh on. It slips back and forth between the past and present while telling two tales in one. Outstanding! It is definitely on my top 5 books of all times list. Sadly, the author wrote mostly history books and was a top authority in her field. She only wrote two young adult books just for fun and it is a great pity she didn't write more!”

As he is dying her father tries to warn her about strange apparitions that often appear at the home called Rest-and-Be-Thankful. Shortly after arriving she sees a young girl in a long cape mounted on a beautiful horse. After telling Peggy where to find Rest-and-Be-Thankful, the young girl disappears. On the road to the home she meets an Englishman who is also on his way to her home.
Peggy quickly learns that her uncle is indifferent to her at best. Other apparitions visit Peggy and begin to tell her their histories and the history of the family home. As Peggy learns more and more about the family’s home, she discovers that her home and the surrounding are was very important in the American Revolution.

“I found this book by chance on a library shelf when I was about eleven years old. Fifty years later, I still re-read it. The ghosts of four of Peggy Grahme's ancestors tell a story that helps to unravel the mysteries and problems of her present life. The ghosts--"not the misty-sheet variety," as Peggy says, are better portrayed than the present characters, who seem to provide mostly a frame story for the tale of past events. A wonderful book for readers of almost any age.”
