Interesting to listen to this author's work when nearly 90% of the story is NOT about vampires but about the evils of some humans (well, one rather twisted human priest!) The CD cut off the last minute or so of the story but overall the development of Lenobia and Martin's love was gentle and sweet in contrast to the dasterdly actions of the priest. Quite entertaining!

It really just talks about Lenobia's life and how she got to where she was meant to be.

This is the second book of the spin-off House of Night Novellas series, featuring Lenobia. and takes place in France in 1788. Lenobia is the illegitimate daughter of a powerful baron. Following the death of his legitimate daughter, Cecile, she agrees to play her role and marry her intended in the Americas. Upon reaching the boat, she learns to her dismay that the Bishop of Évreux will come, too. Skilled in Dark magic, his appetite for young women makes him dangerous – most of all to Lenobia, who caught his eye back in France, She avoids him, pretending to be seasick and while searching the ship uncovers a pair of Percheron horses and comes to befriend their Creole caretaker, Martin. As the days pass they fall in love and upon landing he vows to follow her.
On the way the convoy meets a vampyre who Marks Lenobia. Angered, the Bishop tries to kill her by uses his dark power over fire, but is ultimately killed by Martin, who dies too. Lenobia is traumatized, but quickly discovers an affinity for horses. She finds the strength to move on, vowing to wait for Martin.

Throughout the House of Night series we've been given tantalising nitbits about Lenobia which are finally explained in this book. I'd always been curious about the scar on her back for example. Although I expected Martin to die at the end, his death along with Sister Marie Magdalene was quite upsetting and made me understand Lenobia's reasons for keeping people at arms length. Having read Destined prior to this novella, I can sympathise with her restraint around Travis due to her vow to Martin.

I liked this book because you got to see into before lenobia was changed. What she went through good and bad and how she was marked.

So fun, love the House of Night - though I thought the ending was sure wrapped up pretty quickly and seemed very disingenuous.
