• Valentine Wilde: Nick's older brother,"Val," a captain in the fire department and an important person in the Democratic party.
• Edward Hopstill: Patron at the bar where Tim works. He is a lightning maker.
• Miss Mercy Underhill: Young girl who comes into the bar and gets liquor for medicinal purposes to help the less fortunate. She is in the process of writing a novel.
• Rev. Thomas Underhill: Mercy's father.
• Mrs. Boehm: Bakery owner who gives Timothy a room and becomes a friend.
• Justice George Washington Matsell: Political figure in New York and appointed as New York's first Chief of Police.
• Mrs. Olivia Underhill: Rev. Underhill's deceased wife.
• Mr Piest: A man who befriends police and knows about criminals and what goes on in the streets

• Madam Silkie Marsh: Owner of a brothel on Green Street in New York, a place where customers can get almost anything they want, with no questions asked.
• Moses Dainty: A Democratic Copper Star. He is someone who doesn't mind doing dirty work, if money is involved.
• Julius Carpenter: A black man who worked at Nick's Oyster Celler and runs into Tim at various parts of the story.
• Gentle Jim: A friend of Vals, a dependable man.
• Arthur: Dr. Palsgrave's assistant at the lab.
• Marcus: A young boy who comes to a bad end and is found at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
• Bishop Hughes: Pastor at St. Patrick's Cathedral.
