- Ms. Amanda James: Amanda James: The heroine of Wayward Son, Amanda is a driven achiever, thereby coping with the loss of both parents and her erstwhile college boyfriend, Juan Carlos. A likeable loner, this multilingual 28-year old mostly enjoys the company of her cat, her surfboard and her crossword puzzles. But she also has a thirst for adventure and challenge instilled by her ex-marine father. Her skills are perfectly suited to the task of entering and exploring the observatory in which she receives her vision of Cain’s life, but she is much less prepared for the confrontation with evil that ensues.
- Cain: Cain: The first-born of Adam and Eve, Cain is cursed by God to become a vagabond. In Wayward Son, the “mark of Cain” entails not only protection from those who would physically harm him, but also immortality and a flawless memory, lest he forget his crime against his brother Abel. Thus, the protagonist wanders from the Biblical land of Enoch to ancient Egypt, Greece, Persia, Alexandria, China, and eventually Rome. Along his epic journey, Cain faces the constant challenge of masking his secret while making his way in successive civilizations. While the knowledge and experience he accumulates over eons make for great achievement in his various occupations, he must also cope with inevitable loss of family and position as he moves on. The universal human yearnings for wealth, fame, power, love, and longevity are all realized in great measure at various times in Cain’s life, but they are ultimately exposed as empty vessels until he ultimately finds his true source of fulfillment.
