- Dr. Thomas Silkstone: A twenty-five-year-old anatomist from Philadelphia who works in London.
- Edward Crick: The owner of Boughton Hall in Oxfordshire who dies mysteriously.
- Lydia Farrell: Edward Crick's sister; she is married to an Irishman named Michael Farrell and enlists Dr. Silkstone's help to look into her brother's death.
- Captain Michael Farrell: A former army captain who wheedled his way into marrying Lydia. His hatred of her brother is well known to the Crick family as well as all of Oxfordshire.
- Lady Crick: Lydia and Edward's senile mother. When her husband died, she fell ill and is prone to bouts of madness.
- Dr. Thomas Silkstone: Young doctor dedicated to anatomy & forensic science, medications & potions & their effect on the human body.
