  “These books are written very simply, naively - almost like Young Adult novels. The characters say everything they think, and they think very straightforward thoughts. The bad guys don't have any motivation more complex than "I'm evil".
  
  But then for some reason the books have a gritty, dark streak that has more of an impact than it would if the rest of the plot was correspondingly gritty.
  
  There were some editing errors, one of which had me re-reading the page again and again to try and work out what was going on.”
