Regency Historical. Although Spindle Cove -- nicknamed "Spinster Cove" -- is a haven for unmarried women, it's not exactly a hub of scientific research. So, to present her groundbreaking work on fossils, Miss Minerva Highwood is determined to go to Edinburgh, home of the Royal Geological Society. Since she cannot risk being waylaid by highwaymen, she strikes a bargain with Colin Sandhurst, Lord Payne: if he'll pretend to elope with her to Scotland, she'll give him the prize money she's sure to win -- 500 guineas that he desperately needs to pursue all the debauchery that London can offer a jaded rake. (As a bonus, it'll also distract Payne from her well-dowered yet innocent sister.) But will Payne's good looks and charm distract Minerva from her mission? Don't miss this 2nd book in the Spindle Cove series, after A Night to Surrender.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “'You know,' he said,'this design begins to appeal to me after all. Sea slugs aren't the least bit arousing, but logarithms . . . I've always thought the word sounded splendidly naughty.' He let it roll off his tongue with ribald inflection. 'Logarithm.' He gave an exaggerated shiver. 'Ooh. Yes and thank you and may I have some more.'"Lots of mathematical terms sound that way. I think it's because they were all coined by men. 'Hypotenuse' is downright lewd.""'Quadrilateral' brings rather carnal images to mind."She was silent for a long time. Then one of her dark eyebrows arched. "Not so many as 'rhombus'."”
    Colin and Minerva
  • “'I'd be more than happy to let you survey my physical perfection in its entirety. But only if I get to see you, too.'. To her shocked silence, he replied, 'It's only fair. Tit for tat.''How is that fair? You've seen countless tits.'”
    Colin and Minerva
  • “She looked like a memory, interrupted. A torrid dream. Or a glimpse of the future, perhaps.”
    Colin Sandhurst
  • “I can see you're baffled." "Oh, good. I would have admitted as much, but I know what pleasure you take in pointing out my intellectual shortcomings.”
    Colin and Minerva
  • “My name is Minerva. I'm not your pet. And you're deranged if you think I'd ever marry you."”
    Minerva Highwood
