Cal Bollings is a boy growing up in Loyalty Island, Oregon. His parents aren't getting along, and with the death of the town's fishing business owner the heir, Richard, decides to sell the business. Cal's mother moves to California and his father leaves on a fishing expedition. It is later reported that Richard has fallen overboard and drowned. Cal has been staying with his friend Jamie and his family, but learns Richard is being held captive in Cal's basement. Cal and Jamie visit Richard, but do not release him. One of the abductors, Don, decides they need to release Richard. Cal calls his father, who instructs him to leave a gun on the table. Cal later learns Richard was shot.
