“Here's the thing I love about Maria V Synder's novels: they are as easy to slip into as a old pair of sweatpants, and just as comfortable. You dip your toes into her books and suddenly it's hours later and you're about halfway done.
This is the story of the last known Healer, on the run since a plague ravaged the population, her capture and subsequent adventures and run-ins with the factions vying for control of the shattered world. There is a little bit of the Black Death here, a little romance, a little politicking, and so on. It's very easy to be swept into the world.
However, like the air of comfy sweatpants, nothing here is that substantial. The romance was present but not the stuff dreams are made of. There was plenty of adventure and conflicts, but with few exceptions, they felt like filler until we go to the next Major Conflict or Character Reveal.
There is a decided Young Adult flavor about this book - not that it's a bad thing. Touch of Power isn't the best thing ever and it's certainly entertaining, but I didn't leave the book with the emotional echoes that some other books have left.
That being said, I have no reservations about recommending this book. If you like this sort of thing, then this will be the sort of thing that you like.”
