Cammie wakes up in a convent in Ireland and her memory is totally blank. She calls her mother, Rachel Morgan, who comes after her and takes her back to the Gallagher Academy where she is interrogated and tested. Cammie also sees Zach, who now goes to her school. Zach, Bex, Macey, and Liz are all upset with Cammie for worrying them so much and risking her life by going out on the mission alone. Cammie suspects that Bex and Zach are dating. Solomon hasn't woken up from the explosion yet, so Abby is teaching CoveOps. Abby hides Mr. Solomon in a secret room, nursing him back to health and hoping that he'll wake up. The Operatives go to Mr. Solomon's cottage, where Cammie had briefly stayed that summer. A man from the Circle tries to kill Bex and Cammie (with Cammie being the real mark), but Cammie kills him without knowing how the gun got in her hand, or remembering picking it up at all. Cammie fears what she may have become during that lost summer. Cammie has weekly therapy with Dr. Steve. Cammie and Zach overhear the school trustees saying that Cammie is not trustworthy because she killed a man, which leads Cammie to being upset and Zach comforts her with a kiss.
Cammie and the others discover that she went to Rome during summer and they all go there. In Rome, they discover that Cammie has told Preston everything about Gallagher Academy and the Circle during the summer. They go to a bank where they find Cammie's father's journal and a letter. She discovers that the locket she wears is the Gallagher family crest: the key to where the list of the people in the Circle is. The map was found on a stain glass window in school. They also find Mr. Morgan's grave, where Cammie remembered she was taken when being interrogated and tortured by the Circle of Cavan. They all go to Gilly's family's castle where Cammie finds the list on which all of the Circle's heads names are written by Gilly but Zach's mom (leader of the Circle) finds her and takes the list. Back at school Cammie finds out that Dr. Steve is apart of the Circle of Cavan and that he was the one who tortured her and removed her memory, but she couldn't remember everything so they let her come back so that she could be interrogated in a place where she felt safe. Cammie finally remembers everything. She and her father went to a circus before he died, where he was given a napkin with the list written on it. Because Cammie is of incredible intelligence, her memory is near photographic, and she remembers the names on the list. Dr. Steve tells Cammie to jump off the roof so he could escape, but Cammie's mom and friends save her. Cammie remembers the list and writes down the names. The list includes Preston's father. Macey and the others agree to get Preston from Rome next semester when Cammi i's well as an attempt to finally end this once and for all.
Although all of the previous books have said ages 11 and up, this book is a little bit darker and a little bit more mature. There's nothing explicit, but it's mentioned that Cammie was tortured, and there are deaths and attempted murders. I'd suggest maybe 12 or 13 and up, but it depends on the person reading it, and how they'd be able to handle some violence.
