“Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”

I think it's ironic that the main character of Fault in our Stars refers to her favorite book in this way, primarily because it is exactly the feeling that I get from this book.

It is hard as a teacher, to convince a student to read a book for the sole intention of growing as a person and becoming a better person as a result. Most students think that I am trying to trick them into reading something literary critical, or they expect that I expect them to come back to me with a critical analysis of the book (or even worse: they expect that I want them to come back having "found" the theme).

But no, my love for reading extends further than just analysis. It starts (and ends) with the quest to find a book that successfully evokes all the spectrum of emotions in us and makes us better people as a result. I think this book does that. It is a lovely story that is heartbreakingly real. A reflective piece on life and love and fate and all that fades.

This is a really great book about teenagers dealing with their cancer. However, I just couldn't believe in the two main characters. I just felt like teenagers do not talk like that. The adults I know don't talk like that either. I understand Green was making these teenagers wise beyond their years on purpose, I just couldn't relate to them. A colleague tells me the characters in all John Green's novels are super intelligent. I haven't yet read other books by Green but I certainly will. Even though I had a hard time accepting the main characters I did believe in their love story. It is also interesting to read how they deal with their cancers. This is, overall, a very good book.

I read this book in a day...I couldn't put it down. I cried and cried, but loved the book all the same.

Partners well with The Age of Miracles. Might work as an introduction to philosophy for those who wish to read it that way.
