- Sophronia Angelina Temminnick: The main character of the book. A tomboy. Her mother wants her to be a proper lady like her older sisters.
- Dimity Ann Plumleigh-Teignmott: The first girl Sophronia meets when going to Miss Geraldine's Finishing Academy and becomes her friend. Faints at the sight of blood.
- Sidheag Maccon, Lady Kingair: One of the new girls (the new girls at the Academy are called "debuts") like Sophronia at the Academy. Sidheag is from Scottish descent and doesn't care much for girly things. One of the teachers said she would never become a proper lady even if it is her title.
- Monique de Pelouse: One of the girls Sophronia meets at the Academy. As a punishment, she was taken from the higher level classes to the beginner classes . Snarky. Thinks highly of herself.
- Pillover Plumleigh-Teignmott: Dimity's grubby brother, an evil genius in training.
- Preshea Buss: Pretty, petty student.
- Agatha Woosmoss: Shy student.
- Mademoiselle Geraldine: Clueless headmistress of an exclusive, albeit unorthodox, finishing school.
