- Kyle Tait: An electric worker who is stranded in Houston Texas after an EMP attack destroys everything. Decides to walk 1500 miles back home to Montana to be with his family.
- Jennifer Tait: Kyle's wife; living in Montana with her three kids and trying to find a way to survive as well as keep hope alive that her husband is still alive and on his way back home to her
- David Tait: Kyle and Jennifer's oldest son; fourteen years old
- Emma Tait: Kyle and Jennifer's daughter; middle child
- Spencer Tait: Kyle and Jennifer's son; kindergartener
- Grace: Kyle and Jennifer's next door neighbor; becomes like Jennifer's mom after the attack
