  • Mirany: A girl who speaks to the god. She was once one of the Nine, the Bearer, and now she in hiding from Argelin's corrupt government.
  • General Argelin: Power-crazed, angry and vengeful, Argelin is the man now in charge. He is hunting down the Nine, the Archon and all the god's associates.
  • Alexos: The Archon, the god's form on Earth. He is a ten-year-old boy who is powerful yet easily distracted. He only wants best for his city.
  • Seth: A scribe, friends with Mirany, the Archon, Oblek and the others. He has returned from the desert and has infiltrated Argelin's palace.
  • Oblek: The musician, a close friend of the Archon. He is fat and used to be a drunk, until he drank from the Well of Songs. Now, he does't touch a drop of wine. He cares deeply for Alexos.
  • Chryse: Blonde, dumb, cruel and deceiving, Chryse is one of the Nine.
  • Manto: A former hetaria, a cruel witch.
  • Kreon: The god's shadow, he roams the tombs, his true domain.
  • Fox: The Jackal's right hand man, a good thief.
  • Prince Jamil: The hostage of Argelin and later, the Jackal.
  • Hermia: The dead love of Argelin. He murdered ber by accident in the last book, and now wishes to get her back.
  • Ingeld: The leader of the Northern mercenaries hired by Argelin with the promise of gold. He is conspiring with Manto to seize the city and raid the tombs.
  • Tethys: One of the Nine held captive by Argelin.
  • Rhetia: One of the Nine - she is proud and haughty, but wishes the best for the city.
  • Pa: Seth's father.
  • Telia: Seth's younger sister.
  • The Jackal/ Lord Osarkon: A master thief, plagued by nightmares of his previous identity.

  • Oracle: The hole in the ground on the Island where the God speaks to the Nine.
  • The Nine: Nine girls are chosen from the City to serve the god, each with various positions such as the Bearer or the Speaker.
  • The Well of Songs: The Well of Songs is a well at the end of the desert, found by Seth, the Jackal, Oblek and Alexos when travelling in the previous book. They have all drunk from it, and it has helped them each in their own way <e.g. Oblek has stopped drinking>
  • Garden of the Rain Queen: The equivalent of Heaven or an afterlife.
