Wild Magic (Immortals)

by Tamora Pierce

Thirteen-year-old DaIne has always had a knack with animals, but it's not until she's forced to leave home that she realizes it's more than a knack -- it's magic. With this wild magic, not only can Daine speak to animals, but also she can make them obey her. Daine takes a job handling horses for the Queen's Riders, where she meets the master mage Numair and becomes his student.

This first book of the series was fine. A mountain girl will learn about her wild magic as she faces increasing challenges, but her friends help her through it. I like the inexpert and bold ways of a novice who finds herself in new sophisticated circles, and the emphasis on her animal friends. Enjoy this book, but stop there. I was increasingly disappointed with the other books in the series. By the end, the best characters of the first book were forgotten, and we have to suffer through a whiney romance, half hearted plots, irritating characters, and a confused but energized young girl who's been prematurely transformed into a smug and predictable "adult". The story kept rolling along, but I had to drag myself through it, and I find some of the passages in poor taste and inappropriate, just thrown in there as an attempt to wake us up.

Yeah, this is a really good series. It's about a girl named Diana and she has a special type of magic called wild magic. It allows her to talk to animals, and the animals can understand her. At first she's afraid of the power, but soon she trains under a mage/ sorcerer, and learns how to control it. She is hired by the queen to join her group of riders to fight immortals. You should definitely read the whole series! It's absolutely enrapturing. The following books: Wolf Speaker&Emperor Mage are just as good.

A good foundation to the books that come after she comes to Tortall and realizes she can have power even though shes a girl.

Of all the stories by Tamora Pierce, this was my favorite. I adored Dain and admired her strength and courage. The relationships she builds with both Numair and her animal friends is absolutely wonderful.

This series by Tamora Pierce is good, but not as good as the other set in the Tortall universe. Don't get me wrong, I still loved it. But Alanna's series and Keladry's series and Alianne's series were so much richer for me. I would recommend this series as a good YA pick.

Daine is no Alanna, but she's a wonderful heroine nonetheless. She doesn't have the Gift, she has Wild Magic - magic that allows her to talk to animals, magic that is tied to the earth. She is from Galla but gets a job in Tortall working with the horses of the Queen's Riders. Alanna and George show up, as well as Jonathan, Thayet, Buri, Raoul, and others from the Song of the Lioness quartet. A great new story in a familiar land. (I say new...but I've read this quartet three or four times before!)

Another great series by tamora pierce starts here. I would say my favorite of all she has wrote so far! A wonderful tale of a girl learning about herself, her magic, and her world. of course, it contains what was a must for me in my early reading, lots of animals and magic!

Another Tortall series, and even better than the Song of the Lioness! I know a bunch of people who read this one and begged me for the next one!

This series is excellent. I connects well with the first series she wrote, but it defines itself in a unique way. I actually enjoyed it a tad more then the Alanna series.
