A characteristically gripping read that combines the detective skills of Lieutenant Milo Sturgis and his friend Dr. Alex Delaware as they investigate the horrific murder of a vituperative woman who has been butchered. The jaded and hardened detective, as well as the coroner, are sickened by the brutality of the crime which gives few clues about motive. Alex is startled to realize that even the colleague who met with her about a job-related complaint has difficulty remaining neutral about her negativity. Additional victims ratchet up the intensity of the search and Milo calls in several colleagues, including Detective Petra Connor, but the clues are sparse and seemingly unrelated. Painstaking investigative techniques eventually begin to shed light on potential motives but Miles and Alex may never recover from the horrors encountered. There are a few inconsistencies in the story but none that will significantly detract from this gritty and mesmerizing read.

A familiarity with the series would definitely be helpful since there is little exposition of the prior relationships between Alex, Milo and Petra.
