- Andraste: is the daughter of the fairy Queen Rhiannon of Luminous and the elfin Prince Auragonius of Nymphia. At the beginning of the novel, she takes her place as Warrior Queen of Luminous and wages war against Empress Sarai and the Abatu Empire.
- Elvin: is the son of a bloodthirsty war general named Syok and a siren. He is descirbed as being particularly attractive. Elvin also has powerful healing magic.
- Adair: is the general of a Nymphian tribe called the Naedan.
- Lady Clare: is the Court recorder and a renowned harpist.
- Rhiannon: is Andraste's mother and former queen of Luminous.
- Baine: is a general from the Nymphian tribe, the Trinivanites.
- Sarai: is Andraste's aunt and empress of the Abatu Empire.
- Dyssassa: is Elvin's stepmother.
- Teivel: is a prince and dragonslayer from the kingdom of Rainia.
- Oishea: is a goddess of dark magic.

- Alina: is a maid in the Faylin Palace.
- Bracea: is the leader of the Naedan tribe.
- Sabynn: is Elvin's younger brother.
- Blair: is a minor noble, and also the name of a healer.
- Lady Radiance: is Andraste's cousin. She's blind in one eye, due to an arrow wound, but is still rather pretty. She's vain and adventurous, and she likes to play the matchmaker with her friends' lives.
- Ebhlin: is a Nymphian seamstress.
