G.R. Yeates edited the summary of The Eyes of the Dead Thursday, July 7, 2011.
The novel begins with Private Reginald Wilson suffering from a flashback of the horrific events that have befallen him. We see him and his mates, Sergeant Smith and Private Brookes, as they attack the German position of Black Wood, near to Passchendaele. Brookes is wounded and borne away from the battle by Wilson and Smith. They take shelter in an abandoned church crypt where they encounter a decaying vampiric creature, the Vetala. Wilson survives its attack on them by fleeing the scene and is subsequently pursued by the Vetala through the frontline to a Base Hospital on the coast. At the Base Hospital, Wilson is treated for gas gangrene and shellshock but it becomes clear that the Vetala have a hold over him and he may be murdering patients and staff at their behest. During a German air raid, the Vetala reveals itself and its kin slaughter everyone in the hospital except for Wilson. He is allowed an escape into no man's land, or what appears to be no man's land, where he eventually confronts the Vetala and his own guilt over the deaths of his mates.
