I really enjoyed this book. It is partially a history of search, including Altavista, Yahoo, Microsoft Live, etc. and describes how Google gradually evolved from starting as a grad school project to its IPO. Along the way it covers ad revenue, gmail, etc. If you are interested in Google, search engines in general, or the future of advertising on the web, I highly recommend John Battelle's book.
