  • Simon Bolivar Buckner: Was at one time the commanding general of the Orphan Brigade
  • John C. Breckinridge: Former KY senator in the U.S. Senate, former governor of KY, and one-time commanding general of the Orphan Brigade
  • Ed Porter Thompson: Author of the book and member of the Orphan Brigade, fought until wounded and deemed in too poor health to fight and then served in the rear here he began collecting data for this book. After the war he wrote other books, in addition to this one, and served as Superindent of Public Schools.
  • Roger Hanson: Killed in action; served as POW when his 2nd KY regiment was captured at Ft Donnelson; commanding officer of the 2nd KY
  • John Lewis: Final commanding officer of the Orphans; He surrendered them at war's end.

  • Orphan Brigade: Formally known as the 1st Kentucky Brigade, it is uncertain how the nickname "Orphan" came about. Some say it was because once this group of men left KY they became orphans never to return to the homeland until the war was over. Others attribute it to John C. Breckenridge, who having heard of their heavy casualties exclaimed, "My poor, orphans!".
  • 2nd KY Regiment, CSA: Headed by Roger Hanson; along with the 6th and 9th Brigades, they never returned home unitl the war's end. This regiment covered the retreat at Ft Donnelson and the entire regiment was taken POW. They were the rowdy ones. It was said Hanson's men bivouaced at the local jail.
  • 5th KY Regiment, CSA: Comprised of men mainly from Eastern KY Mountains, were referred to as the "Sang Diggers" by the other men because of ginseng being abundant in eastern KY. Was initially assigned to the Eastern KY and Western VA area under Humphrey Marshall. Fought at Perryville KY and left there under the direction of General Braxton Bragg headed for Chickamauga where they fought alongside the Orphan Brigade. After this they were reassigned to the Brigade and fought as a part of the Orphans until war's end.
  • 6th KY Regiment CSA: See description of 2nd KY CSA; First commanded by Joe Lewis. Most were from the western part of the state.
  • 9th KY Regiment, CSA: See description of 2nd KY CSA; Most men came from the western part of the state.
