  • Amelia Gray: Our protagonist aka The Graveyard Queen. She owns a cemetery restoration business which coordinates with her paranormal ability to see ghosts.
  • Luna Kemper: Asher Falls town librarian, real estate agent, and sole administrator of a donation made to the Daughters of our Valiant Heroes for the beautification of Thorngate Cemetery. She hired Amelia for the cemetery restoration.
  • Sidra Birch: A mysterious adolescent girl who assists at the Asher Falls library after school. She is described with "cropped, silver-gold hair and waiflike demeanor." Brynn's daughter.
  • Thane Asher: Heir apparent for the moment to the shriveling Asher Empire.
  • Hugh Asher: Thane's philandering uncle who raised him after Thane's father died.
  • Pell Asher: The wheelchair-bound patriarch of the Asher family, Hugh's father and Thane's grandfather.
  • Tilithia "Tilly" Pattershaw: Fred Covey's, and currently Amelia's, nearest neighbor. Known as the "bird woman" because she rescues birds who have been hurt.
  • Angus: A emaciated bait dog used in dog fighting training now a stray who emerged from the woods near the Covey home. Amelia befriends him.
  • Wayne van Zandt: Chief of the Asher Falls police. His rugged face is scarred with five jagged ridges which run from his lower right eyelid to his hairline.
  • Ivy Birch: Sidra's manipulative friend
  • Bryn Birch: Luna's friend and Sidra's mother.
  • Catrice Hawthorne: Noted ornithologist and Asher Falls artist
  • Maris Asher: Hugh's wife
  • Freya Pattershaw: Tilly's deceased daughter believed to have died in a fire.
  • Lynrose: Amelia's aunt who lives in Charleston
  • Etta Gray: Amelia's adoptive mother who has cancer and is currently living with her sister, Lynrose.
  • Caleb: Amelia's adoptive father.
  • Edward Asher: Pell's deceased son.
  • Devlin: A police detective who Amelia fell in love with in Charleston.

  • Asher Falls, South Carolina: A dying secluded rural community located in the Blue Ridge foothills accessed quickly by a ferry.
  • Thorngate Cemetery: Amelia was hired sight unseen by a historical society/garden club to restore Thorngate Cemetery. There are actually two Thorngate Cemeteries. However, one is on land flooded by water when a dam was used to create a reservoir.
  • Asher Reservoir: A reservoir known by the local citizenry as Bell Lake created after a construction of a dam. It hides several homes and the original Thorngate Cemetery. The bodies weren't moved before the reservoir was created.
  • Asher Falls: The beautiful falls are considered by many to be a thin place where heaven and earth are the closest.
