  • Rhine: Was one of Linden's wives, but she ran away with one of the servants, Gabriel, who she loves. Main character and narrator. Has a twin brother she is searching for. Has a genetic anomaly which gives her two different colored eyes.
  • Gabriel: Gabriel worked at the Governor's house until he ran away with Rhine. Male lead in this book. Love interest for Rhine.
  • Lilac: Lilac is a girl in the Scarlet District; one of Madame's best prostitutes. She is hard and emotionally strong, though surprisingly nurturing. She has a malformed daughter named Maddie.
  • Maddie: Maddie is a malformed girl. Her mother is Lilac, a prostitute held captive by Madame in the Scarlet District.
  • Claire Lottner: First generation, tall, heavyset, with dark skin and a deep mellow voice. Runs Grace's Orphanage
  • Silas: Oldest orphan at Grace's orphanage.
  • Linden Ashby: Rhine's husband. Seems to be nice man, but completely oblivious to everything going on around him.
  • Vaughn Ashby: Linden's father and Rhine's father-in-law. Cruel scientist.
  • Cecily: Rhine's sister wife, young, red-headed and impetuous. Happy to be a sister wife and mother.
  • Madame Soleski: First generation woman who runs a prostitution camp. Paranoid woman who names her girls after colors.
  • Annabelle: Fortune teller
