Archie is on vacation in Montana at his friend, Lily Rowan's ranch. A dead body turns up and Archie knows the man accused couldn't have committed that crime. He explains to Wolfe that he must stay and try to see justice done, even if it takes months. Wolfe of course, cannot, or does not wish, to have Archie gone that long. Once again the two wills clash and the outcome is a good fish out of water story. This is perhaps not the best Stout novel, but it has its moments and is well worth the read.
