Cabin Fever shows Greg as he tries to behave for the entire month of December in order to make Santa's Nice List, which includes him wearing sweatpants because Santa can "see him when he's sleeping and know when he's awake". His mother finds a magical elf toy called a "Santa's Scout" that monitors children and reports back to Santa, which makes Greg even more nervous and he thinks that he won't manage to make the Naughty or Nice List at all.
Greg attempts to raise money by selling "Drummies" at school, with him and Rowley advertising around school via posters. This backfires when rain causes some of the neon paint on the posters to leak onto the school's walls. Greg is caught when Rowley makes an anonymous tip to the Principal and Greg is forced to clean the paint off by himself. He tries to tell the Principal the true story, but to no avail. When Greg returns home he finds a note from the police, which he assumes is because of the posters and that they will send him to prison.
Soon a blizzard hits the town, leaving Greg snowed in with all of his family except for his father, who is forced to stay in a nearby hotel because the roads are closed. Manny ends up crushing their mother's glasses, leaving Rodrick and Greg responsible for caring for everything in the house. Things are made more stressful when the basement floods, destroying many memories and scrapbooks, some of which Greg didn't like at all. They eventually start running out of food and the power cuts off, which makes everything worse. Greg is surprised when Rowley comes over with Christmas cookies and reveals that the power was never out, using the entire neighborhood as proof. Greg checks the circuit breaker and discovers that it was cut off and that Manny did it because no one would show him how to tie his shoelaces.
Greg turns the power back on and his father manages to come home on Christmas Eve, which their mother calls a "Christmas miracle". His father provides them with more food and everyone enjoys a happy meal together. The police arrive later and Greg realizes that their earlier arrival was for old toys for the toy drive and that he wasn't in trouble at all. Later on Greg attempts to make money by shoveling the pavement in front of the local church to search for "Giving Tree" money, only for him to deemed a "hero" by the local press for allowing people to come and eat on Christmas, which Greg plans to write about in his new paper "The Neighborhood Tattler".
