John of the Cross is unique - he expresses theology via poetry. He is a mystic...no "5 easy steps to holiness" with this guy. You'll find yourself coming back to his writings again and again.
His unfinished work, "The Ascent of Mount Carmel", is one of the more challenging models of the Christian life. I've read it several times and keep coming back...usually having tumbled down hard from whatever lofty place I might have reached in my own spiritual climb.
John of the Cross is one of the great treasures of Christian spirituality. Mystical, yet practical; poetic, yet philosophical. ”
