Great book with themes for discussion revolving around love, family, alcoholism, and the ethics of raising a U2 sub off the coast of RI. Would be great for HS discussion.

A formula romance leant to me by my friend Theresa, with a few good passages. "Mickey had felt discarded by Richard during his drinking years, and again during the divorce--it must have seemed that her father had traded his time with her to spend every minute with his new girlfriend. Now that...

I liked this book because it was a romance but that wasn't the whole point of the story. I didn't like this book enough to really remember it.

This is about a girl named Mickey with a strong passion for nature, birds in particular. Her and her friend have been watching birds their whole lives together. Yet, one year Mickey's friend begins to outgrow her interest in birds and Mickey starts to feel very alone. Her father has just left and she feels betrayed and now her best friend, who she thought she would never lose, seems to be pulling away. Then, the snowy owl comes to the beach by her house. This is her favorite bird and she has never seen it before. Seeing this owl leads to a series of events including her meeting a new boy who she falls in love with, the decision that they would pull the U-boat, an old war submarine and major part of her town, from the ocean floor, and even a new relationship for her mother. This is a great story about a young girl with a passion. Her friends may not share it with her but she always has her family. Her mother is always ready to go with her to visit the owl, bird watch, and much more, and this means so much to Mickey.
I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

I like this book. It took me awhile to read it, but it was only because I didn't have enough time to. I would recommend Luanee Rice books to anyone. They all seem to be hard to put down.

A formula romance leant to me by my friend Theresa, with a few good passages. "Mickey had felt discarded by Richard during his drinking years, and again during the divorce--it must have seemed that her father had traded his time with her to spend every minute with his new girlfriend. Now that he'd stopped paying child support, it was if she no longer existed. Money was strange currency for a young girl's self-esteen, but there it was. (27) Neve thought of how a person's silence and unhappiness could use up all a family's oxygen, threaten to take over the house. Before Richard left, when he was the most miserable, days could go by without any real conversation. He'd sit at the dinner table, barely saying a word, both Neve and Mickey walking on eggshells, trying not to upset him. (262)

A novel of second chances in life--some things will haunt us, some things cause us to close off from those we love--with second chances we can regain our perspective and circle back to what is really important in our lives.
