- Ellen Kay "Ellie" Shaw: The book is from Ellie's point of view. She is the heroine telling the story. Ellie's led a perfect life with Robert "Bobby" Bradford, but that is about to change. Ellie is giving, loving, funny, self-critical, and not nearly as confident in herself as her best friend Carrie.
- Dr. Michael Shaw: Michael has been married to Carrie, Ellie's best friend. He has known Ellie since their early college days and secretly been in love with her. Michael is a brilliant surgeon with a successful practice at Swedish Medical Center in downtown Seattle. He is a "family man", always supportive of his child and Ellie's. He's thoughtful and steady (most of the time) and loves Elllie.
- Robert Bradford: Robert is smart, a little self-absorbed. He and Ellie have been married to each other for eighteen years and have three children. Robert is an attorney.
- Carrie: Carrie was such an intriguing character to write. Many can relate to having a friend like this—the most attractive, the most popular, the most sought after—a taker, in the extreme. The friendship Ellie has with Carrie exemplifies the stamp of longevity, even permanence. On the surface, they seem to be friends for all the right reasons. Yet, Ellie doesn’t realize what’s really happening beneath, until she discovers that Carrie has committed the ultimate best friend betrayal.
