“When fire destroys their forties-themed restaurant, Pamela and Chris Cross buy a vintage house with the intent of starting over again.
Renovation is barely begun when their dogs, appropriately named Sherlock and Watson, uncover a body buried in the cellar. Chris, who bears a striking resemblance to Humphrey Bogart, and Pamela are drawn into an investigation, which is encouraged by their past as well as relatives of the victim and new acquaintance, Janet, a homicide cop whose superiors aren’t interested in expending resources on a cold case.
Their path leads them to an elderly woman who formerly owned the house, assorted other characters, another body, threats and danger before the case is solved.
Pamela and Chris are a couple you wouldn’t mind spending time with and the story held my interest throughout. If you like your mysteries in the cozy mode, you’ll find this a good choice. Though the clues were there, the ending took me by surprise.
