Lover of these books that I am, I found a website devoted to D Dunnett and to the books. At some point she answered questions about the series and the characters--most interesting and helpful. There's even a Dorothy Dunnett Readers Association that has conferences, seminars, and trips! It's a cult! And I'm a happy member.

I loved this series! I plowed through the "House of Niccolo" series and, yeah, some of it was hard going, but after finishing those, what?, eleven or twelve books, "The Game of Kings" was, to me, a little more accessible. I was worthless for a week while I finished the series. There are images that still haunt me. Dorothy Dunnett, to paraphrase someone else on the board, expects a lot from her readers but the payoff is major. This woman must have been a force to be reckoned with and I truly regret not reading these books before she died so I could have written her a thank you letter. I'm going to let a year go by so I'll forget some of the details and give myself the pleasure of re-reading the series. It's right up there with the "Poldark" books, and that's big praise.

It was difficult to get into, but this series has to be one of my all-time favourites!

Ok, I'm glad I'm able to read some of your review. I just started this book and man, is the author's writing style tough to get through! From what i understand though, if I get through the first 100 pages, i should begin to enjoy....and the first book basically sets the backdrop for the rest of the series. Here's to hoping that I make it and become a fan of the Lymond Chronicles as well!

I discovered the series way back in the sixties, had to wait for the last three to be written. I still keep re-reading bits when I'm between books for the sheer pleasure of the writing and the story. I've never found anything better than the Lymond Chronicles.

Agreed...they're work, but they are more than worth it...they leave you gasping at the end and wanting to start the whole thing all over again...
