Emily has left the security of her parent’s money – and their perfect family facade – and is trying very hard to live the regular life of a normal college student in Callister, NY. When her roommates leave for the summer, Emily contemplates a forlorn summer, until she is attacked in the Projects by a dog, and its frosty owner – a boy in a grey sweater. She does not understand the strange, beautiful boy’s hostility towards her but becomes intrigued when he finds her again to try to make amends. Emily’s fascination leads her to a dark cemetery where she is abducted after witnessing a man being murdered. She knows that she should be dead...instead she wakes up with a pounding headache and the boy – Cameron – at her bedside. After a stomach-churning drive through the blackened countryside, Emily is taken to the gang’s armed compound in an isolated area of Vermont to face her fate. There she meets the rest of Cameron’s gang, including Carly, Spider and Rocco who are the closest thing that Cameron has ever had to a family. When she spies on Cameron…and a striking blonde, Emily finds out that her estranged brother Bill had been the gang’s leader until he died of an overdose and that Cameron had replaced him as the young, albeit reluctant CEO leader of most of the gang factions in the United States. Cameron is a killer, but around Emily he is a different person, like the mask has been removed…or perhaps it has been put on. Despite her insecurities and fear of attachment, Emily falls in love with Cameron and his adoptive family. But she is unsure whether Cameron is in love with her or whether the dangerous boy is simply using her. When Emily becomes suspicious of Cameron’s disappearances, she discovers how deeply Cameron is entrenched in a life of crime and she prepares her escape, believing that Cameron is plotting to kill her. But a tragic event will force Cameron and Emily to the truth of their love and further drag Emily into Cameron’s perilous underworld, something that Cameron had been desperately trying to avoid. After Emily is captured by the rival gang leader who seeks Cameron’s control over the other gang factions, Cameron will have to decide whether to save Emily…or risk his life and his family’s life.

Quotes edit see section history

  • “Whoever said that love hurts was wrong. Love is excruciating, especially when you can feel it slipping through your fingers and there is nothing you can do about it. Like someone was playing tug-of-war with my limbs, ripping to shreds whatever was left behind. What it would feel like when love was lost...I wouldn't survive that.”
