  • Finley Jayne: A girl with strange abilities and a dark anger. After being fired from a previous position, she was hired as a companion for Phoebe Morton by her mother. She poses as Phoebe's cousin "Finley Bennet."
  • Lord Vincent: A man of science, creator of automatons, a widower, and engaged to Phoebe, although twice her age.
  • Phoebe Morton: Daughter of Lady Morton; engaged to Lord Vincent.
  • Mary: Finley Jayne's mother. Lives with her stepfather over a bookstore. She is eager to help Finley when she needs it.
  • Silas: Finley Jayne's step-father; a book shop owner.
  • Thomas Jayne: Finley's birth father.
  • Lady Morton: She hired Finley as a companion to Phoebe, her youngest daughter.
  • Fanny: An automaton assistant in the book shop, who had no voice box.
  • Robert: The man Phoebe really loved.
  • Lord Morton: Phoebe's father, in a desperate financial situation from being a compulsive gambler.
  • Cassandra: Lord Vincent's deceased wife; cousin to Lady Morton who resembled Phoebe.
