The Teacher by: Jude Deveraux
from the omnibus: Upon a Midnight Clear
This is the life of Cole after Kady and Tarik save his family by going back in time to prevent a large group of unnecessary deaths caused by the towns people that in an alternate future causes generations of bitterness and hate.

The truly grown up Cole has not fared too well he gets a girl pregnant and when she tries to trap him into marraige he refuses and she runs off with a circus performer and leaves their son on his doorstep to raise.

Luke not really knowing what to do does not discipline the boy and pretty much lets him run amuck and unchaperoned even while he has out of town business. When he sends to the east for a teacher and thinks that he is getting an older woman who has experience with crazy and dangerous people, he is unaware that his son has finegaled an alternate woman to fill the position.

When Kathryn de Long arrives in the chaotic town of Legend she is shocked beyond belief, she is confronted with a handsome stranger kissing her passionately when she saves his life by yelling out a warning to him. He thinks that she is one of the "ladies" of one of the houses. So when she shows up at his office to take the job of teaching his son he not only doesnt believe her he thinks she's trying to con him and working as a joke for one of the men in town. He dismisses her flattly after exchanging proof with her and refuses to keep his word.

She leaves his office and finds a lawyer who reluctantly takes the job but only after his wife gives him some juicy bits of info about the Judges daughter gettin heartbroke by Cole.

It all works out but she had by this time just wanted to get the money and leave Legend altogether. The judge will not have this and is sentencing them both to her having the job of straightening this boy out after finding that he is responsible for the whole misunderstanding.

When Cole admits to being wrong and tries to give the lady her money not believing she can handle his wayward son she challenges him and he takes it. and leaves town to go on business and comes back to a changed boy.

Finally after ignoring each other and trying to maintain a business relationship they both realize they are falling in love, but Kathryn has a secret and doesnt think its right to endanger Cole and his son so on
midnight christmas eve she leaves with Jeremy and disappears only to find herself pregnant and hungry and worrying about Jeremy. While standing in line at a soup kitchen she nearly faints when she sees Cole 6 months later and heavy with his child he scoops her up and takes her to his hotel room where he has already set Jeremy up with food and a clean bed. And he tells her that he knows about her trouble and that her fears are over from Sean O'Connor as he fell off a horse some time ago and broke his neck and died.
