Didn’t Like It“What I loved most about this book is how Calvin Harris has loved Cate and gone out of his way to just be near her. He understands that after losing her husband she's not nearly ready for romance. |
“Good book. The romance and mystery mix is great. Will read more of her books.”

A young widow, she lives peacefully with her four-year-old twin boys, running a Bed-and-Breakfast. Though the overnight guests are few and far between–occasional hunters and lake fishermen–Cate always manages to make ends meet.Calvin Harris is the local handyman and has had fallen for her since she came, but has never been able to approach her and just blushes when he sees her and cannot utter a word. Everyone knows about his feeling but Cate herself, so they try to throw them together by making things happen like loosening a drain pipe and stuff.
One morning, the B&B’s only guest inexplicably vanishes, leaving behind his personal things. A few days later Cate is shocked when armed men storm the house, demanding the mystery man’s belongings. Fearing for her children’s lives, Cate agrees to cooperate–until Calvin saves the day, forcing the intruders to scatter into the surrounding woods.
The nightmare, however, is just beginning. Cate, Calvin, and their entire community find themselves cut off and alone with no means to call for help with all of them trapped in the town and held hostage Cal is the only one who can go around the enemies and save the whole town and its people. To her utter astonishment, Cate suddenly realizes, the felling she has felt for Cal since the terrifying incident, is Love. Now she will have to risk his safety for the people of the town and a peaceful future for them all.”
“I must admit that I stayed up all night reading this book. I do so LOVE Linda Howard and I can't wait for her new book.”

The action was exciting and while romance definitely wasn't a priority with the author, what was in there was excellent. Definitely one of my favorites.”

This book, along with TO DIE FOR, sat on the shelf for a couple of months as I re-discover my love for the paranormal. By the time I picked these two, I wondered if my subconscious was telling me to read the better books first.
The story is set on a small town in Idaho. Three years ago, newly-widowed Cate Nightingale moved to Trail Stop and opened up a Bed & Breakfast. Life seemed simple enough looking after her small business and twins sons. Then one day, a mysterious guest simply jumped out of the window and left all his personal belongings behind. Unbeknownst to Cate, that man was the accountant of a notorious gangster who will stop at nothing to get back information that could lead the FBI to him, even if it meant holding the entire community hostage.
Enter Cal Harris. For three years, everyone has known of his feelings for Cate - except the recipient herself. For her, he was just the local handyman whose shyness has always puzzled her. But when two thugs threatened to harm her, Cal comes to the rescue in a way that Cate never expected from him. It seems that there is more than meets the eye to Mr. Harris, after all. And the truth will soon be revealed when the bad guys come back with reinforcements and threaten to wipe out the entire town.
COVER OF NIGHT is a romantic suspense that sadly falls short in the romance area. While the characters are very likeable and the premise of the story is good, I felt like this was written by another author and not by the same one who has written edge-of-your-seat thrillers like KISS ME WHILE I SLEEP or scorching romance like AFTER THE NIGHT. The romance lacks development that by the time the main characters got together, it felt like a last minute addition in order to be able to sell the story as a romantic suspense. Another gripe I have with this is the lack of insight into Cal's thoughts. I felt that a background on his past earlier in the story would have been more effective. Nonetheless, this wasn't a bad read, just not the best Howard novel out there. I certainly adored Cate's little sons and their antics, and even some of the townspeople provided some amusement.
Don't start with this if you have never read any of Howard's books before. ”
“What I loved most about this book is how Calvin Harris has loved Cate and gone out of his way to just be near her. He understands that after losing her husband she's not nearly ready for romance.
That is pretty much where my love for this book ends.
The romance was far too rushed even given the circumstance and nothing irks me more in books then when marriage is tossed out.
Was disappointed with this one by Linda Howard.”
“skip it, it COULD have been a good book, but half way threw the book. I wanted to throw this book off a mountain.”

She and her two twin toddlers run a B&B. She makes ends meet with the help of Calvin Harris, jack-of-all-trades. One of her guests myseriously diappears and then the trouble egins as the underworld comes looking for him. She and Calvin and the whole neighborhood find themselves cut off from the outside world by these criminals that are looking for something this man has left behind. Great mystery”
