Knowing how popular and much loved Debbie Macomber is I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately, I really didn’t. One Night features Kansas City morning radio hosts Carrie Jamison and Kyle Harris. Carrie finds Kyle irritating because he is so much like her father–-hard-nosed, straightlaced, unemotional. Kyle is frustrated by Carrie because she reminds him of his mother–-free-spirited, emotional, spontaneous. They are on the brink of being fired from their jobs unless they can learn to get along. So they hit the road to Dallas to attend a conference in the hopes that a road trip together will give them time to work through their issues with one another. On the way to the conference their car breaks down and they are briefly kidnapped by a wanted fugitive, which ultimately gets them involved with some dangerous people and thus introduces the secondary characters and the back story. While in Dallas, Carrie and Kyle start to realize they have feelings for each other and sleep together. Carrie ends up pregnant and for much of the rest of the book Kyle is trying to convince her to marry him. I won't give away any more.

I didn’t really enjoy this story because I felt like the plot was too simplistic and that the characters were never fully developed. I didn’t understand Carrie and Kyle’s motivations or the progression of their relationship. It wasn’t clear to me how they went from hating each other to madly in love all because of one disastrous road trip. I found it hard to believe that Carrie and Kyle were actually in love at all or that they were really right for each other. Their fights are never about anything really important. I actually thought Carrie and Kyle were more immature than anything. The secondary characters could have been interesting, but again were never fully developed. And the back story tried to be mysterious and suspenseful but fell short there too. I also like a little more spice in my love scenes.

Unfortunately, One Night didn’t entice me to read any more Macomber novels anytime soon. I’ll leave them on my TBR list but it may take another TBR Challenge to get me to read another one.

This is an older book by Debbie McComber that was re-released for new readers. The story was a little hokey. Two news anchors (one female/one male) are constantly at odds with each other. The producer of the news show decides to send them to a conference together. After many mishaps on their road trip and getting mixed up with a mysterious counterfeiter they do end up sleeping together. Carrie becomes pregnant. Kyle wants to marry her but Carrie has her doubts about Kyle's professed love for her. As they work to solve the mystery Carrie realizes that she really does love Kyle, they get married, and have a baby girl. Kyle ends up producing a news show for an ABC affiliate in Kansas City and Carrie announces that another baby is on the way!

The story was entertaining but the characters did not seems as real as the characters in McComber's "yarn" stories. The subplot with the criminals was confusing. This was not as good as other McComber books that I have read.

Great story... with a little mystery included for a change.

This book was very good. It took a while for me to get into the book, but after I did, it was a page-turner. I love romance, yet dramatic novels, and this was definitely one of those! The ending was full of surprises which made me keep wanting to read more and more. Overall, this is a very good book!
