Natural History 285 books / 95 members / 88 posts Natural history is the scientific research of plants or animals, usually leaning toward the observational rather than the experimental, and encompasses more research that is published in magazines than in academic journals. Natural history involves the research and formation of statements that make elements of life and life styles comprehensible by describing the relevant structures, operations and circumstances of various species, such as diet, reproduction, and social grouping. The term has grown to be an umbrella term for what are now often viewed as several distinct scientific disciplines of integrative organismal biology. Most definitions include the study of living things (e.g. biology, including botany and zoology); other definitions extend the topic to include paleontology, ecology or biochemistry, as well as parts of geology and climatology.

Natural history is the scientific study of plants and animals in their natural environments. It is concerned with levels of organization from the individual organism to the ecosystem, and stresses identification, life history, distribution, abundance, and inter-relationships. It often and appropriately includes an esthetic component.
—Stephen G. Herman, 2002

It has historically been a haphazard study, description, and classification of natural objects, such as animals, plants, minerals, and placed an importance and significance on fieldwork rather than lab work. A person interested in natural history is known as a naturalist or natural historian. Natural History is not commonly applied to the fields of astronomy, physics, or chemistry.

I LOVE love to read...! 200 books / 258 members / 36 posts

Great Green Gobs (of Easy Eco-Friendly Stuff) 56 books / 218 members / 1046 posts We all want the world to be a better place -- less garbage, less pollution, more trees and green stuff.

Still, we're lazy. Most of us aren't going to picket polluters or collect cans from street corners for recycling or campaign to institute greener practices in our cities and towns, even though we have a sneaking suspicion that we probably should.

Still, there are a lot of little things we can do to reduce the amount of garbage we produce and there are many businesses that are going as green as possible that deserve our support. Let's share them here!

***PLEASE NOTE: I would like this group to be a place where one may get ideas of easy eco friendly things to do, so that everyone can feel as if they are contributing to the betterment of our living space, even if it is only a teeny, tiny minuscule contribution. It all adds up. So let's aim for encouraging posts and helpful hints rather than the guilt inducing ones, all righty? = D

Also, if you have a product or book, etc, to recommend and have ACTUALLY USED OR READ the thing yourself, feel free to throw it up there. But please don't use this space to advertise your completely unrelated book of poetry or new novel. Thanks! ****
The management thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

Broads Book Club 44 books / 9 members / 121 posts Private group for the Broads who love to read, eat, drink and discuss books.

For most people, what is so painful about reading is that you read something and you don't have anybody to share it with.
In part what the book club opens up is that people can read a book and then have someone else to talk about it with. Then they see that a book can lead to the pleasure of conversation, that the solitary act of reading can actually be a part of the path to communion and community.”
