A fastinating and sometimes humorous (but always biting) look at the effects of postcolonialism.

A quick read that really makes you think about your position as a tourist when traveling to different countries

So far I love it. It's a thin book I thought I could read quickly, but it is so poetic and dense with profound items to think about that I'm still working on the 74-page masterpiece. Very insightful narrative on history, identity, racism, and the legacies of colonialism

This should be mandatory reading for post colonial students and for everyone who doesn't know truth about the price a nation (Antigua) pays in slavery and in freedom.

I really liked how this book was split up into sections of time. I thought that because they were unnamed, it gave it a sense of mystery and it made it seem as if the story was more loosely structured which made it flow better for me. I thought it was interesting that the author portrayed tourism as ugly and tourists as ugly people. I guess I can see why she would make us think that way because when it comes to major tourism in small unknown countries, a lot of tourists can overturn the culture of the country and westernize it which can ruin the country. Also, the author makes a point when she says that to tourists, everything can be unreal when they visit a new, exotic country and because they stay in their modernized hotels, they never really realize what is going on in the heart of the country which can lead to a lot of misunderstandings and problems.

A very interesting and very important book. It tells us how ignorant we have been about what is going on what we call developing small countries, while we enjoy our rich life. We all should read this book.

This is an angry and brilliant small book. I can imagine Ms. Kincaid almost spitting it out. I will certainly never travel to a poor if beuatiful country and not think about the fact that I am on vacation and most of the people providing service to me - can not go on vacation. A skillful writer pierces the idyllic charm of Antigua. Looking beneath the surface...

Some beautiful writing. It is good to remind the tourist that they are visiting someone's home. This book also manages to condemn colonialism and the government of Antigua, and show the poverty and limits of life there. The oddest 'memoir' I have ever read.
