I really enjoyed this book becuase it was perceptive and insightful. Lucy is a young girl from the West Indies who comes to New York to work as a nanny for a wealthy couple. Lucy, who can sometimes be judgemental, notices the cracks in their marriage, and how Lewis (the husband) ignores Mariah (the wife). However, the story is truly about Lucy- how she grows into herself and accept her past. Reading Lucy made me want to read other books by Kincaid, and it also taught me not to feel bound to the past, since this was the root of much of Lucy's anger.

The scene from this books that remains seared in my memory is the one in which Lucy observes that whenever she talks about a problem, Mariah hands her a book about it (instead of listening or providing an empathic response).
