A collection of short stories where Munro returns once again to her familiar locations (rural Ontario and the coast of British Columbia) and to her most enduring question (why we love the people we do), but she pushes her craft even further than she has before, from the complex, four-part dance of the title story to the frightening "Save the Reaper" and the masterfully constructed finale, "My Mother's Dream."
Her normal secrets, love, betrayal, and the stuff of ordinary lives, is ever present but as is usual for this master of the short form, the path she takes is anything but ordinary. The stunning title story is a case in point. A narrative in four parts, it begins with the drowning of a small-town optometrist and ripples outward, touching first the boys who find the body, then a spiteful dying woman and her young practical nurse. Whose tale is this, anyway? Not the optometrist's, surely, though his death holds it together. The stories flow from one into the other just like our stages in life, before you know it, you've done what you were meant to do lol!
