Persian pickle is a reference to paisley print material. The club is a quilting group that has been in existence in Harveyville, Kansas for many years at the time of this story in the 1930s. Times are very bad with a major drought and the Depression’s joblessness. The story is told by Queenie Bean, a young farm wife. She provides insight into the multigenerational group and the social network of the community, with lots of references to quilting. When a new member is introduced and begins asking questions, she stirs up old secrets. When a body is discovered the women band together to support and protect each other. This is an affectionate look at the Depression-era mid-west with a little mystery thrown in.
