  • Anastasia: Main character, grand duchess, youngest daughter of the Russian Tsar. Narrator of the book, Anastasia tells her story in a form of a diary, where she writes all her thoughts and feelings.
  • Alexei: Tsarevitch, Anastasia's younger brother who has hemophilia, a disease where his blood doesn't clot, passed down from mother to son.
  • Olga: Anastasia's eldest sister.
  • Tatiana: She flirted with the Russian soldiers, she always said she didn't. The second oldest of the sisters.
  • Mashka: The third oldest sister who wanted to marry a Russian soldier and have 20 children!
  • Alexandra: Tsaritsa, granddaughter of Queen Victoria of England, and Anastasia's mother.
  • Nicholas II: Tsar and Anastasia's father.
  • Father Grigory: A holy man, adviser to Alexandra. Also known as Rasputin (dissolute).
  • Anya Vyrubova: Alexandra's close friend.
  • Grandmother: Nicholas II's mother and Anastasia's grandmother who loves to have parties and balls.
  • Dr. Botkin: The family's doctor.
  • Ella: Alexandra's sister.
  • M. Gilliard: The children's French tutor.
  • Baroness Buxhoeveden: Member of the court.
  • Mr. Gibbes: The royal family's tutor.
  • Derevenko: Alexei's sailor-helper.
  • Natasha: Dunyasha's daughter.
  • Prince Carol: He tried to marry Olga, she didn't take him. Good thing, then she would have been in the place where the germans were.
  • Ivan: He was OK.
