“Overview: Editorial Review.
Marcel Proust (1871-1922) spent the last fourteen years of his life writing "A la recherche du temps perdu". It is an intimate epic, an excavation of the self, and a comedy of manners by turns and all at once. Proust is the twentieth century's Dante, presenting us with a unique, unsettling picture of ourselves as jealous lovers and unmitigated snobs, frittering our lives away, with only the hope of art as a possible salvation. He offers us a form of redemption for a sober and secular age. Scott Moncrieff's delightful translation was for many years the only access to Proust in English. A labour of love that took him nearly as many years as Proust spent writing the original. Moncrieff's translation strives to capture the extraordinary blend of muscular analysis with poetic reverie that typifies Proust's style. It remains a justly famous classic of translation. ”
“I'm not sure it has the same impact in English than in French. This man had a soo rich flowerish pen... but it is a bit heavy to come to the end of the book, as there is not much "action", this is my point of view only, of course
“I'm sooooo glad it is finally over! I struggled through this book for a whole month (I hate to leave books I start reading unfinished!). The first part of the novel was interesting enough. However, after a while it started to get really boring and redundant. I'm happy that I finished it and that I'm able to move on to something else now! Phew!”JEWEL wrote this review Friday, November 21, 2008. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
“A classic. One of the greatest writers of memoir. Swann's way is the first volume, but, it stands alone as a masterpiece of form, emotion and lost time.”Robert P wrote this review Friday, June 13, 2008. ( reply | permalink ) Was this review helpful? Yes | No
