It also has an unfortunate air of snobbery and elitism about it – people who’ve read it feel (justifiably?) entitled to brag and coolly use the adjective “Proustian” as a litmus...” see full review » see other reviews » |

Having studied poetry writing in college, I'm used the modern aesthetic where meaning is compact, where words are used carefully, pulling on all their possible nuances and functions to get to the essential of what needs to be said. Proust is the opposite. He isn't choosing his words carefully; he's rolling in them like a gangster in his money, soaking in them like some rich duchess in a warm milk bath. One doesn't read Proust to find out what will happen, but for the sheer pleasure of reading something immensely well-written. If I wasn't afraid of being ridiculed (what the heck, I've come this far), I would call his punctuation orgasmic.”
