The action, fortunately, does increase in the second half of the novel. Although the idea of the novel is fairly cleaver, the writing is consistently horrendous. Brandon Mull obviously wrote with a thesaurus nearby, which makes authorial voice sound quite unnatural. In many cases, he completely misuses these words. The book claims to be a YA book. Challenging your children's vocabulary is a good thing; however, having to stop the narrative every couple of sentences to define words is obnoxious. Anytime narrative flow is interrupted damages the story. I will pass on reading any other Brandon Mull novels. ”

At times a bit on the simpler side, but it was a really fun, enjoyable book. About a pair of siblings who go to stay with their grandparents, only to discover they are the caretakers of an area that is inhabited with fairies, witches, trolls and such, that humans can only see when they drink the milk of a certain cow. Very fun story”

It's always fun to create a picture in your mind from the words you read and this story has wonderful description to do that. I would say it's a bit too descriptive on some of the scarier parts for kids though. I actually listened to this on CD so maybe that's why I was more imaginative.”

It was a bit slow for the first few chapters, but took off toward the middle. The second book jumped right in and kept my attention, though. The characters act like real kids and true siblings :)”
