I loved the book despite the movie. Whenever I recommend it I have to counter these preconceptions people have because of Omar Sharif and that dreadful song "Lara's theme".

I liked this book because it wove an important moment in history with the personal plight of a poet, artist and doctor. It was descriptively and lyrically written (though a bit cumbersome by today's standards...I never was a fan of Hemingway, though)...

Has anyone who read this book recently tell me why they liked it? I'm kind of confused because I disliked it so intensely, but a lot of people gavve it great reviews. Maybe I missed the bus, but I felt like it lacked focus...did anyone else feel the same, or if not, why did you love it so much?
