“Only half way through it, not a 'book at bedtime' but fascinating in a macabre sort of way. I visited Auschwitz earlier this year so I can visualise the places he describes, this book is filling out what I saw with real-life experience.”

Filip Muller talks about his earliest transports from Slovakia in April 1942 and his working experience in the gassing installations and crematoria in May. He saw many people come in while they were alive and leave the camp dead in ashes after being shot, gassed or tortured. He also saw the people that came into Aushwitz and survived it by sheer luck. He is one of the few prisoners who saw the Jewish people die and lived to tell about it. I feel that this is definitely one of the key documents of the Holocaust due to the fact that it is a first hand account from an actual survivor.
This book has affected me deeply and has truly affected me emotionally. I could not believe the fact that when the Jews first arrived at Auswitz they did not know that they were there to be killed or to be held as prisoners. As Filip describes, the soldiers at this camp tricked the people into taking a shower just so they would enter into the gas chambers without panicking and resisting. They gave every Jew a fake bar of soap and they also played classical music outside of the chambers so that people would feel more relaxed.Filip said: "To the sound of the camp orchestra playing a sentimental folk song we marched off to work through the main gate..." When they actually entered into the chambers, a very powerful gas, Zyclon B (used in WWII) was let out in steam form to kill the people. I was very saddened to read this and realized how much pain and suffering the Jews went through in this camp.
After reading this book, I realized how much the Holocaust has affected Jews and how much damage and lives it has caused. I would highly recommend this book to everyone because it is very heartfelt and true. It will make you realize alot of things that you did not know about regarding this historical event. ”
