“12 year-old Me doesn't remember much about this book, save how Corran Horn is a whiny bitch, there is a nasty virus, Rogue Squadron captures Coruscant and Tycho is arrested for murdering Corran. The details either never sunk in or 12 year-old me repressed them. Maybe a combination of the two?
OK, so the basic premise: Six months after the events of X-Wing: Rogue Squadron, the newly reformed Rogue Squadron continues to live up to its name and the Rebels decide that in order to defeat the remnants of the empire they must take Imperial Center, formally known as Coruscant. It opens as Tycho tells Corran about his time in Lusankya, the Imperial mind-control prison. But he claims he wasn't brain washed. Whiny bitch Corran "believes" him. Really he does.
The rest goes like this: Corran really likes Mirax, but Erisi is SO HOT. And Erisi is also a bit of a slut, so she'd totally sleep with him. And she tries to. On numerous occasions, but Corran's "gut" keeps telling him it would be a bad idea. Maybe Corran is secretly the grandson of a Jedi killed in the Clone Wars. Maybe it's the Force trying to tell him that Erisi is the spy, not Tycho. Or maybe Corran is just lame. Who cares if she is a skank and might give you a horrible disease? Doesn't bacta cure everything? Seriously, one might think he has a crush on Tycho. Which would make sense, with all the misplaced agression shown towards him.
Anyway, the plot is rather formulaic. Rogues infiltrate Coruscant in disguise. Poor Gavin gets tried for biggotry (despite hanging out with all sort of aliens) because he didn't want to dance with some Bothan chick trying to rob the cradle. The kid's only 16, woman! Anyway. Plan A to get Coruscant's shields down (plant a virus in the city's central computer) goes FUBAR. Plan B (using a giant mirror to evaporate a resevoir and create a huge storm and power-outage, no shitting you) almost goes FUBAR but is saved by Deus-Ex-Machina Corran. Then Corrant gets abducted by aliens some crazy Imperial chick a la the Fire In the Sky, only everyone else thinks he's dead. And poor Tycho is put on trial for his murder. Dun dun DUN.
So, overall, this book was a little on the retarded side. Mostly due to Corran. [Seriously. At one point he sees Tycho (who is not supposed to be on Coruscant, granted) talking with a guy COMPLETELY UNRECOGNIZABLE due to his cloak and facing away from Corran and he just decides that Tycho MUST be talking to Kirtan Loor. No one else could possibly be wearing a cloak. Seriously.] Wedge is still pretty badass, as are Tycho and Winter. I'm sort of 'eh' on Iella Wessiri, Corran's old cop partner. I know she and Wedge will eventually get together and spawn, but I could take her or leave her at this point.
