Have you ever imagined what it'll be like if you were part of the 1861-1865 civil war, the war between the state/the war of rebellion? Well Tom Carroll a not so average boy has been part of it.

In Brooklyn 1862, Tom Carroll's dad had died from the war and Tom's family just doesn't have enough money to survive with only his sister and mother working,Tom has to take his dad's place but he doesn't want to join the army.At last Tom had no choice but to go and he realized that he was part of the war.

A Passage from the book, "Go on," he said, laughing."Pick it up.It's yours. More to come if you want it."I looked at him and then at the coin. More than a weeks pay right there! Truth is, I didn't think twice before i snatched it up and took off to our rooms as fast as i could to our rooms. Behind me, I could hear him calling, "you're with me now Tom!" As i galloped home, coin clutched in my hand, I kept thinking of Captain Ericsson's words: you will tell no one what you see here there are spies everywhere. Is that all understood? And i thought, that man's a rebel spy! a copperhead! he wants me to spy! I chose this passage because it is a beginning of an event that is quite big and also made me eager to read on.

I chose this book because not many people like to read HF, but this was one of the first HF's i read and i thought it was pretty good. The characters in this book include Capt. Ericsson, Tom, Mr. Quinn, Mr.O'keef, Ma, Dora and rebels. The author of this book, Avi, has also written other books like The Secret School, The true confessions of Charlotte Doyle, Captain Grey and more! "This is Tom's story-as i imagined it.Now it is your story!-- Avi

This is a novel based on historical fact about the Civil War battle between the Monitor and the Merrimac. The main character is a young boy named Tom who has lost his father in the war. His family needs money badly so he goes to work at the ship yard that is constructing the Monitor.

Complicating his life is a Confederate spy who acts like he wants to make friend with Tom and offers him money for information on the Monitor. That situation gets worse until, later in the book, it escalets into violence.

Most of the book is about the work Tom was involved in, including the construction of the Monitor, people's opinions about the ship before it sailed (the opinions were almost all negative), the trial cruise, various problems the ship encountered, and then the actual battle with the Merrimac. It's all done in a very realistic and very interesting manner; it's no boring straight academic-type recounting but a telling of something well enough that you can picture the events as they are descibed.

    A really good book.

A godo review of what really happened between the Monitor and the Merrimac. A little too much telling at times, but kids probably wouldn't notice that as much.

I was disappointed in this book by Avi. Perhaps I've recently read Crispin which was wonderful. The story could have been more fleshed out. I did like the history very much. It's refreshing to read a small tidbit of history that is easily overlooked. I liked the way the true photographs were combined with the illustrations.

This is a very good historical fiction. It was created for kids, so it was an easy read, but I enjoyed it a lot.

This book is good. I learned a lot about this time in history without the book being that boring. The only thing that I didn't like was that it used all these words that were military or ship terms, etc. that I didn't know and didn't want to go look up. (I'm pretty sure this book had a glossary) I really like the story though, but I think it would've been better for someone who is interested in wars and ships.
