Some 21,000 English settlers immigrated to New England between 1629 and 1640, and in only a few generations their descendants would spread over much of the eastern seaboard north of Delaware and move west across New York, northern Pennsylvania, and the Northwest Territories (the area north of the Ohio River that in time became Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and northeastern Minnesota).
