A satisfying book of short stories that includes interesting places, times, and characters.

This book of twelve short stories written by Barbara Kingsolver is just as entertaining as her novels. Tales of a cheating wife, a couple contemplating starting a family, and a disfunctional mother-daughter relationship are among the stories included in the book.
My favorite, Why I Am A Danger To The Public, is the story of Vick Morales who is in jail for strike related misconduct at the Ellington Copper Mine.
Blueprints and Bereaved Apartments are other stories I expecially enjoyed.

If you want some real, flesh-and-blood, kicking and screaming and loving characters, read these stories. Some of them are practically masterpieces (Homeland, Rose-Johnny, and Why I Am a Danger to the Public, especially), and even the not-so-good ones have skillful images and beautiful language to recommend them.

Liked the title story with the Cherokee grandmother but most stories a little too chick lit for me.

Kingsolver is my favorite writer and short stories are my favorite genre, so what's not to love with this book? My two favorite stories in the book are the most humorous- "Survival Zones" and "Islands on the Moon." The first is set in the midwest and captures mid-america culture and values in a way that reminds me of Jane Smiley's "A Thousand Acres". The second takes place in Arizona but could have happened anywhere. There are several laugh-out-loud passages in both of these stories.

Good, but not as good as I expected. Her novels are much better than her short stories, in my opinion.

Her writing is remarkable but I am not a fan of short stories. Only read 2 stories,

My favorite stories in this collection were "Rose-Johnny" and "Bereaved Apartments." Most unforgettable was "Covered Bridges."
